Experience a luxury safari of one or two days in the Tankwa Karoo Semi Desert region on one of our outstanding safaris. Our safaris offers travellers the opportunity to experience luminous clouds of dust that swirls through the ancient landscape of the South African semi desert.

The Tankwa Karoo is only 2,5 hour’s drive from Franschhoek and guests will experience the Succulent Karoo Biome where one can find rare plant species, rich endemic birdlife and rocky landscapes in comfortable four star accommodation. The safaris start in Franschhoek and will be moving along the scenic Hex River Valley and Bainskloof pass. Travellers can expect to see a number of plant species and mammals including Cheetah, Lion, Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Giraffes and many more.

By visiting this semi desert region of South Africa with one of Winelands Experience’s guides, visitors will also experience the red glowing sunsets as well as the vast and unforgiving landscape filled with ancient san rock art in a truly African arid zone. The Karoo being the largest ecosystem in South Africa, it is home to a fascinating diversity of life and all having adapted to survive in these harsh conditions.

1) DESERT SAFARI (daily departure)
DAY 1:
HIGHLIGHTS

Travel via the wine region & Tankwa Karoo and fruit growing region of Ceres. Welcome drinks on arrival at Inverdoorn Game Reserve, 2 hour game drive in open air 4x4, walk with giraffes (time permitting at game rangers discretion), visit lion project at the reserve and enjoy lunch under trees in the open-air or in the boma style restaurant and later relax around the pool in summer or at the fireplace in winter.

2) DESERT SAFARI (OVERNIGHT)
DAY 1
HIGHLIGHTS

Travel via the wine region & Tankwa Karoo and fruit growing region of Ceres. Welcome drinks on arrival at Inverdoorn Game Reserve, 2 hour game drive in open air 4x4, walk with giraffes (time permitting at game rangers discretion), visit lion project at the reserve and enjoy lunch under trees in the open-air or in the boma style restaurant and later relax around the pool in summer or at the fireplace in winter. Guests will later enjoy an early evening game drive and later a 5 course dinner.

DAY 2
HIGHLIGHTS

Breakfast will be enjoyed in the restaurant and morning leisure facilities available such as tennis and golf. A two hour trip in spectacular settings on quad bikes available (optional). Scheduled Game drive in open air 4x4 and lunch under trees in the open-air or in the boma style restaurant.

3) BUSHMAN SAFARI (OVERNIGHT)
This is a safari that will take us to the untouched wilderness area south of the magnificent Cederberg mountains, three hours from Franschhoek in the Tankwa Karoo semi desert. The area is well known for its scenic beauty and bizarre rock formations typical of the Cederberg and has a rich cultural heritage with hundreds of Bushman/San rock paintings or rock art of up to 6000 years old and it is a unique experience in the Western Cape. Visitors will experience a San Cultural Tour and can appreciate the ancient Bushman living sites at first hand and get an in-depth interpretation of the rock paintings from one of the reserves’ expert field guides. Accommodation at the luxurious game lodge are nestled between unbelievable sandstone formations and resembles bushman “caves” and cottages, all with en-suite bathrooms. The area is also known for its fossil rich earth and wildlife such as Springbok, Eland, Gemsbok, Zebra and Hartebeest. In spring the mountains turns into a floral splendour and visitors will experience this rarity of Africa on safari, surrounded by romantic red sunsets and succulent plant species of this great thirst land. In this region one can almost see every star in the universe on one of the stargazing tours at night.

 
DAY 1:

Travel via the wine region & Tankwa Karoo and the fruit growing region of Ceres. Enjoy a San Rock Art excursion and a Sundowners tour. Night drives are available on request and a stargazing tour will top the evening. Quad bike tours available (optional).

DAY 2
HIGHLIGHTS

Guests will enjoy breakfast in the lapa and will have the morning available for leisure activities such as hiking trails and quadbike tours and spa. Scheduled game drive in open air 4x4. The safari ends with a scenic drive through the Hex River Valley and Bainskloof Pass.
